For the duration that you are acting a character in a stage scene, you functionally are that character, because people are constructing the interactive world that behaves exactly as if you were.
If you've ever wanted to experience what it's like to be someone or get to be someone in particular, acting is a really powerful way to do it, and kids succeed at this all the time by playing pretend.
